Two Weddings in Two Weeks

Mark and I have spent the last two weekends at weddings of our dear friends. One was outside Chicago and the other was smack dab in the key center of Cleveland. We drove to one and flew to the other. One was a couple that have been dating since college and the other was a couple who met on match.com. Both weddings were reflective of the couple and their families. And both weddings were absurdly joyful.

Banquet hall, bold colors, and 200 guests in a quiet city
This couple compromised by getting married in a Greek Orthodox church in Ohio because her family is in Ohio and his is Greek Orthodox. Their ceremony was, obviously, traditional....and completely in Greek. Their reception meant business when it got all of the rituals out of the way early (cake cutting, first dance, and speeches) to make way for the real events (eating and dancing). Laura and Nick sat on executive chairs on a small stage across from the band's stage and the large sporting event monitor with motorized camera that followed guests at random (Hello, Vanessa hiking up her dress AGAIN). And after the 6 hour party we were stuffed with delicious food and drink, but we still sampled two party trays of Cleveland pizza in our rooms, after-party style.

A Barn, bottles of wild flowers, and 70 guests in a loud suburb The second couple wed in a barn that was nestled in shrubs with chirping cicadas that rivaled that of even New Jersey summers. The ceremony was short but oh so sweet. The couple used some Irish vows that affirm the difficulties as well as joys of life-time commitment, but made me weep nonetheless. And my prometida played Rod Stewart's Mandolin Wind as all the parents, grandparents, and attendants entered and walked the short aisle. The bride did not wear a wedding dress, in keeping with her own sophisticated style. She was nontraditional and beautiful.

Mark and I saw both ends of the wedding spectrum this month. I trust that Amanda and Luke's wedding next month will split the middle.

As you can see in the photos we enjoyed ourselves just as much in the barn as in the banquet hall. I understand now that even though you cannot help yourself obsessing over the details of your wedding, when you finally arrive at the day, all that matters is that you are marrying the one you love and everyone else you love is there to help you celebrate.

Check out Mark's wedding accompaniment. The cicadas are some stiff competition.
